Gaining the Sweepstake Advantage with wit and determination

Evelyn Ryan was an enterprising Midwestern wife, a woman who kept poverty at bay, not giving an inch, with wit, poetry, and perfect prose during the “contest era” of the 1950s and 1960s. She showed that the mind is indeed the most powerful thing, and that thinking is the most dangerous of weapons or tools.

She stood up to the church which was, and still is, a very powerful institution. She stood up to her alcoholic husband, which is a very common occurrence nowadays. She did not stand idly by and allow prehistoric ideas about women rule her life.

Evelyn turned every financial challenge into an opportunity for innovation – to infinity and beyond! While she did all that, she still had to contend with the problems of the home, namely raising her six sons – boys really are a pain in the posterior – and her four girls – such angels. She believed that everything happens for a reason, and that most important of all, she believed that miracles are an everyday occurrence – a truth if there ever was one.

The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How My Mother Raised 10 Kids on 25 Words or Less is a very inspirational novel. The story is told by Terry Ryan, one of the four daughters of the star Miswestern wife herself, and co-written by Suze Orman.

The book speaks of a woman who is able to survive, live, and be merry; despite living conditions beyond her control and having to deal with a useless lout of a husband, all the while taking care of the children. It speaks of her ability to not only survive, but still be happy, and keep a very positive outlook on life, no matter what hardships that she had to undergo.

This ability, the belief that miracles are an everyday occurrence, that miracles aren’t all that special, that they are not confined to holy people, makes for a very startling and unique individual, and with our very patriarchal society being as it is, that’s saying something.

The book is monumental in its appeal, as everyone enjoys reading about everyday people having it rough, and still somehow being able to find a way to keep a smile on their face, something which is lacking greatly in society today.

It is a real eye opener for those that believe that they are living in poverty, when in truth they don’t have it so bad. If there is a will, there is a way. A dream may be a wish one’s heart makes, when one is fast asleep, but it takes initiative, innovation, determination, and belief to make these dreams reality.

The book is a must have, and a must read. Everyone and anyone going through hard times, and even those that aren’t should have at least a peek inside, and realise the secrets held within.
