Just how old is Winnie-the-Pooh?

There is 100-acres, deep in the woods where lives our great friend, Winnie-the-Pooh. This Disney character if one of the most beloved icons of Disney. Some people argue about the actual day Winnie-the-Pooh was born, so to speak. Some say that Winnie was born in 1921. However that is the time that the author, A.A. Milne, made sure a bear was given to his little boy, Christopher Robin, for his very first birthday. That would make Winnie-the-Pooh 91 years old this year (2012).

On the other side of the coin some folk feel that Pooh was not born until 1925, which was the year he started being called Winnie Pooh, not Edward Bear.” That would put Winnie at 87 years old. A.A. Milne settles the argument when he wrote in the House at Pooh corner a conversation between Pooh and Christopher Robin.

Pooh is asked by Christopher Robin to please always remember him, all his life, even 100 years. Pooh agrees, but wonders how old he would be then. Pooh is told by Christopher he would then be 99 years old. Sadly, Christopher Robin died at 75 years old, but nevertheless Pooh kept his promise and never forgot him. It’s true, and the debate is settled because according to Christopher Robin Pooh is 90 years old!

The Start of Winnie-the-Pooh

Pooh’s name was derived from two love animals that the Milne family loved. The two names came from a bear called Winnie and a Swan named Pooh that lived on a lake near by. It has never been discovered as to why the name was changed from Edward Bear to Winnie-Pooh.

It all began when Alan Milne would tell Christopher Robin a bedtime story about his Pooh bear. When Alan was asked by a publisher of London Evening News for a Christmas Eve story, Alan’s wife, Daphne, also drove him on to write the new story about Winnie-Pooh. It ended up being the first chapter of because of it’s popularity for, “Winnie-the-Pooh.”

There was another book called “When We Were Young” and it introduced all the neighbors of Pooh bear: Eeyore, the sad donkey, Piglet, the shy, stuttering baby pig, Kanga, The sweet and lovable kangaroo mom and Roo, her energetic boy. Tigger, Rabbit and Owl were later created by Milne because they were not a part of Christopher Robin’s nursery. Over 150,000 copies were sold in the US by the end of 1926 because the world loved this bear and his friends.

The first two months after the next book, “Now We Are Six” came out in England it sold over 94,000 copies. Finally the last book, in 1928, added Tigger to the group of friends, and was called “The House at Pooh Corner”.

Why Everyone Will Always Love Winnie-the-Pooh

The friendship of Winnie-the-Pooh is limitless as he does anything to help those he cares about. He can be found at any of his friends houses when they get into a dilemma they need help with. His wit may not always be the best, but his love carries him through. The moral learned from Winnie over the past 90 years will continued from now to eternity.
